Signature Silhouette #5 ~ Anne (Radcliffe) Carroll

For many of my ancestors, we have no photographs, no treasured heirlooms, not even a funeral card to remember them by. But of those who could read and write, a few left their signatures behind. They often signed historical census returns, etc, copies of which still survive. Their signature may be all that remains of them today. So, it's my intention to feature a Signature Silhouette, for each ancestor, where ever possible, until all are preserved.

Here's one for my maternal great-great-grandmother, Anne (Radcliffe) Carroll:-

Anne (Radcliffe) Carroll (1849-1918)

Anne's parents were named as John and Mary Ratcliffe when she married Maurice Carroll in Co. Dublin, in 1869. I know quite a lot about John Radcliffe, where he came from and where he ended up, but practically nothing is known about Mary. John and Mary may have married in Liverpool, England and Anne may have been born there, even though the Irish census records of 1901 and 1911 give no indication she was born outside of Ireland. Still...

During this pandemic 'lock-down', I intend to follow up on my theory that the family spent time in Liverpool, and see what else I can find out about them there. Maybe I'll unearth something else confirming them, beyond all doubt, as MY ancestors.  It may be a short experiment.😄

Seeking descendants of John Keogh and Mary Brien

Continuing my first genealogy mission of this year, to seek out the descendants of my third-great-grandparents Jeremiah Keogh and Jane Crosby, this post concentrates on their son John. The goal, at least in part, is to identify his descendants among my mother’s DNA matches. Previous posts focused on their sons Thomas and Martin.

John Keogh married Mary Brien in St Laurence O'Toole's church, Dublin City, on 26 February 1869. John worked as a carpenter, unlike his father and brothers who were bricklayers or stone masons.

When he was 58 years old, on 15 September 1902, John Keogh of 4 Upper Ormond Place died in the Infirmary, at the North Dublin Union Workhouse. He had caught 'pneumonia after drink' and spent his last three days and sixteen hours in the hospital. It seems John may have been an alcoholic. But if he was, unusually for this era, he seemingly didn't fall foul of the law. No record of him is apparent in the Irish Prison Registers.

The couple's known children were:
  • Patrick Keogh born 16 Mar 1869 at 15 Church Avenue, Dublin,
  • Jane Keogh born 26 Jun 1870 at 5 Whitworth Row, Dublin,
  • John Keogh born 4 May 1872 at 1 Faithful Place, Dublin, *
  • Michael Keogh born 29 May 1879 at 68 Mabbot Street, Dublin,
  • Thomas Keogh born 3 May 1881 at 16 Shoe Lane, Dublin,
  • Elizabeth Keogh born 31 July 1882 at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin,
  • Jeremiah Keogh born 28 Jul 1883 at the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin.
* There's currently no obvious explanation for the gap in births between 1873 and 1878.

So far, I've only traced forward Jane, John, Michael and baby Elizabeth, who died aged only two months.

Jane Keogh married John Stapleton in St Laurence O'Toole's church on 29 January 1893 and had three children Jane, Margaret and Patrick, born 1896, 1897 and 1899. Her first husband died in 1906 and in 1912, she married William Wright. When Jane herself died in Dublin in 1942, she was survived by only one brother (presumably Michael), her son and daughter-in-law, her daughters and grandchildren. None of Jane's descendants are yet apparent among our genetic cousins.

Michael Keogh, a labourer, married Mary Farrell in St Mary's Pro-Cathedral, Dublin City on 29 August 1909 and had children Mary in 1910, Margaret in 1912, Elizabeth in 1915, Jane in 1917, Julia in 1919 and probably more born after 1919 when our 100 year privacy cut-off rule currently kicks in. Baby Jane died in 1918. Julia married Pearse Pettigrew in Dublin in 1937 and later John Mooney in 1950. Mary married John Byrne in Dublin in 1929. When Mary died in 1973, she was survived by a brother (presumably one born after 1919) and sister, sons, daughters, grandchildren and even a great-grandchild. Yet, none of Michael's descendants are obvious among our DNA matches.

But, I hit the jackpot with John Keogh (junior)! He worked as a labourer, and married Mary Meehan in St Michan's church, Dublin city, on 23 July 1899. They had two unnamed daughters born in 1900 and 1903, a son Philip born in 1909, followed by John in 1912, Elizabeth in 1915 and Mary Josephine in 1917. It was Elizabeth and her husband Thomas Mullen who appeared as the maternal grandparents for one of my mother's matches on the DNA website MyHeritage.

Recently, this cousin's mother also joined the MyHeritage database. Mam shares 56cM DNA with her, while Uncle Colm shares 93cM, and their maternal first cousin shares 65cM. This falls well within the expected parameters for third cousins.

So, we have a DNA connection with the descendants of two my third great-grandparent's children -i.e. via their son Thomas, who I wrote about here, and their son John. This provides a scientific link, as well as a documented link, to my third great-grandparents.💛

Seeking descendants of Martin Keogh and Ellen Ryan

My main genealogy project at the moment is tracing the descendants of my third-great-grandparents, Jeremiah Keogh and Jane Crosby, to see which of them can be identified among my mother’s list of DNA matches.

And, in doing so, it also struck me how easily entire branches of a family can sometimes die out.

In addition to their daughter, my great-great-grandmother Maryanne Keogh, Jeremiah and Jane had three known sons - Thomas, Martin and John. I wrote about Thomas and his descendants, here. Today, I'm writing about Martin:-

Martin Keogh married Ellen Ryan in St Andrew's church, Westland Row, Dublin city, on 4 September 1871. They had the following children:
  • Jane Keogh was born on 29 July 1872 in Queen's Square, Dublin. She was baptised in St Andrew's church on 2 August. Thomas Keogh was her Godfather.
  • Patrick Thomas Christopher Keogh was born the following year at 18 Summerhill Parade, Dublin. According to the civil registration of his birth, he was born on Christmas eve 1873, but his baptism took place in St Agatha's church on 22 December, and shows his birthday as 18 December 1873. Patrick Keogh of 23 Summerhill, aged two years, was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in 1876.
  • Martin Keogh was born at 23 Summerhill on 27 November 1875 and was baptised two days later in St Mary's Pro-Cathedral.
  • Jeremiah Keogh was born at 41 Mabbot Street on 17 April 1878 and was baptised in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral on 22 April. He died of whooping cough, at home, on 13 March 1880.
  • Ellen Mary Keogh was born at 41 Mabbot Street on 15 May 1880, according to the civil registration of her birth. However, she was baptised on 12 May in the Pro-Cathedral, giving her birthdate as 6 May 1880.
  • Charlotte Keogh was born at 41 Mabbot Street on 14 February 1882 and baptised in the Pro-Cathedral on 20 February.
  • Patrick Thomas Joseph Keogh was born at 41 Mabbot Street on 8 May 1884 and baptised in the Pro-Cathedral on 12 May.
  • Mary Anne Keogh was born at 41 Mabbot Street on 3 July 1886 and baptised in the Pro-Cathedral on 7 July.

Martin Keogh was a bricklayer by trade, same as his brother Thomas. They both followed in their father's footsteps in this regard. On 20 April 1885, Martin landed a steady job in the Works department of the Guinness Brewery, at St James's Gate in Dublin. The department was part of the engineering function at the Brewery, responsible for all its civil engineering projects.

Martin was likely involved in building key Brewery buildings, maybe even the Guinness Storehouse itself.

Guinness Brewery, St James's Gate, Dublin

Unfortunately, on 10 March 1897, Martin succumbed to the dreaded nineteenth-century killer, phthisis, (a.k.a. tuberculosis). And, tragically, over the next five years the disease would go on to wipe out nearly his entire family.

His wife Ellen died within a year, on 19 January 1898. She had breast cancer. However, phthisis took his son Martin, a compositor by trade, on 14 August 1899, then his daughter Ellen, a school mistress, on 1 April 1900, and his daughter Charlotte on 24 December 1901. Finally, his son Patrick, an apprentice carpenter with the Guinness Brewery, died of phthisis on 16 March 1903. So sad, but at least Martin and Ellen weren't around to witness their demise!

This leaves only the eldest daughter Jane Keogh and the youngest daughter Mary Anne Keogh (or Annie as she was called in the Irish census) unaccounted for. They were together, with their brother Patrick and sister Charlotte, at 51 Dolphin's Barn, Dublin, on 31 March 1901, when the Census was enumerated. Jane worked as a draper's assistant, while Annie attended school. This is the last record of the girls so far found.

Perhaps Jane and Annie Keogh later married and had children to carry forward their DNA signatures, but if they did, they are not yet apparent among our lists of DNA cousins.
